Patan City (Lalitpur)

Patan is one of the oldest city in the Kathmandu Valley and located in the south-east part of the valley just 5 km far from Kathmandu city. Four Buddhist stupa around the city said to have been erected in 3rd century and it is believed the city to have been founded in the 3rd century B.C. by Kirat dynasty and later expanded by Licchavi dynasty in the 6th century and again further expanded by the Malla Dynasty during medieval period.

There are more than 1,200 Buddhist monuments of various shapes and sizes scattered in and around the city. The most important monument is Patan Durbar Square which has been listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. The in built cultural heritage like the royal palace, with intricately carved doors and windows and beautiful courtyards adomed with exquisite icons enhance the beauty of the city. Such art pieces are found in stone, metal, terracotta ivory and other objects. All there artifacts exhibit artistic excellence of the craftsmen and the whole city looks like an open museum.

Beside the Patan Durbar Square other interested places in the city are include: Golden temple, Mahaboudha (9 thousands Buddha temple), Rudra Varna Mahavihar, Kumbheshwor 5 story Hindu pagoda.
